Decolonisation of Oceania

Decolonisation of Oceania is the process through which Pacific territories and peoples ended colonial rule or gained greater self-government, through independence, free association, or other political arrangements.

Samoan independence: Western Samoa became independent from New Zealand in 1962, the first Pacific Island country to do so after World War II. It established an early model of negotiated independence in the region.
Free association: A political relationship in which a self-governing state retains sovereignty while sharing defined responsibilities with another state. It offered some Pacific territories a route to self-government without full separation.
Albert Henry: A Cook Islands politician who led the movement for self-government and became its first premier in 1965. He negotiated the Cook Islands’ transition to self-government in free association with New Zealand.
Pacific Islands Forum: A regional organization of Pacific states and territories that coordinates political and economic cooperation. It gave newly self-governing Pacific countries a forum for collective diplomacy.
Self-government: The exercise of internal political authority by a territory or community, which may remain under another state’s sovereignty. Many Pacific territories gained internal autonomy without becoming independent states.
Fijian independence: Fiji became independent from the United Kingdom in 1970 after constitutional negotiations. Its transition shows how colonial institutions and chiefly authority shaped independence.
Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands: A United Nations trust territory administered by the United States across parts of Micronesia after World War II. Its division into successor states and territories shaped several distinct decolonisation outcomes.
Walter Lini: A Vanuatu politician and Anglican priest who became the country’s first prime minister at independence. He led the independence government and articulated a regional vision of Melanesian solidarity.
Melanesian Spearhead Group: A regional organization founded by Melanesian countries to advance cooperation and shared political interests. Its support for Kanak self-determination carries decolonisation into contemporary regional politics.
Sovereignty: The supreme authority of a political entity over its territory and independent conduct of its affairs. Decolonisation often transferred or divided sovereignty rather than simply granting local administration.
