Deep-sea exploration

Deep-sea exploration investigates ocean regions beyond ordinary diving depth using crewed or uncrewed vehicles, instruments, and sampling tools. It reveals seafloor geology, ecosystems, and processes under extreme pressure and darkness.

Bathyscaphe: A deep-diving submersible supported by a float and lowered through the water on a cable. Bathyscaphes enabled early crewed descents to the deepest ocean trenches.
Challenger expedition: A British scientific voyage from 1872 to 1876 that established oceanography as a modern research discipline. Its global soundings and biological collections laid foundations for systematic deep-ocean study.
Seafloor mapping: The measurement and representation of underwater terrain and geological features. Deep-sea surveys chart terrain that cannot be observed from the surface.
Deep-sea ecosystem: A community of organisms and their environment in the ocean's deep regions. Exploration has uncovered habitats and food webs absent from surface-based expectations.
Hadopelagic zone: The ocean layer below 6,000 meters, including the deepest trenches. Its extreme depth leaves much of its geography and ecology sparsely observed.
Deep-submergence vehicle: A crewed or uncrewed vehicle designed to operate at great ocean depths. These vehicles carry observers, cameras, and tools into the deep sea.
Bathyscaphe Trieste: The submersible that carried Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh to the Challenger Deep in 1960. Its descent demonstrated that a crewed vehicle could reach the deepest known ocean point.
Deep-sea biology: The study of organisms and ecosystems in the ocean's deep regions. Exploration supplies specimens and observations for studying life under extreme conditions.
Chemosynthesis: The production of organic matter using energy from chemical reactions rather than sunlight. Vent ecosystems showed that deep-sea life can thrive without photosynthesis.
Deep-sea gigantism: The tendency for some deep-sea species to grow larger than related shallow-water species. Its causes remain debated despite increasing access to deep habitats.
