Deep South

The Deep South is a southeastern U.S. region historically shaped by plantation agriculture, slavery, and distinctive Southern political and cultural traditions.

Cotton Kingdom: The nineteenth-century Southern economy centered on cotton production and enslaved labor. Cotton expansion made plantation agriculture the region’s dominant economic force.
Chattel slavery: A system that treated enslaved people as legally owned property, often for life and across generations. It was the legal foundation of plantation labor throughout the region.
Harriet Tubman: An abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor who escaped slavery and repeatedly helped others reach freedom. Her rescue missions challenged the slave system that dominated the Deep South.
American Civil War: The 1861–1865 conflict between the United States and the Confederacy, fought chiefly over slavery and secession. The war destroyed slavery and the political order built around it.
Atlantic slave trade: The forced transportation of millions of Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. It supplied enslaved people whose labor built the region’s plantation system.
Plantation economy: An agricultural economy built around large estates producing cash crops with a dependent labor force. Its concentration of land, labor, and wealth defined much of Deep South society.
Frederick Douglass: An abolitionist, writer, and orator who escaped slavery and became a leading advocate for emancipation and civil rights. His testimony exposed the violence and political stakes of Southern slavery.
Emancipation Proclamation: An 1863 wartime order declaring enslaved people free in areas rebelling against the United States. It made abolition a Union war aim and transformed the status of enslaved people in the Deep South.
Domestic slave trade: The forced sale and relocation of enslaved people within the United States, especially from the Upper South to the Deep South. It expanded slavery into the region as cotton cultivation spread.
Sharecropping: An agricultural labor system in which tenants paid landowners with a share of their crops. It bound many Black families to land and debt after emancipation.
