Knowra Deep-space communication Deep-space communication Deep-space communication is the exchange of radio or optical signals between Earth and spacecraft operating far beyond Earth orbit. It enables command, navigation, and the return of scientific data across vast distances.
Deep Space Network : NASA’s global system of large antennas communicates with interplanetary spacecraft and radio astronomy missions. Its widely separated antenna complexes provide continuous coverage as Earth rotates.
Link budget : An accounting of transmitted power, antenna gains, propagation losses, and receiver performance in a communication link. Mission teams use it to predict whether a distant signal will remain detectable.
Spacecraft tracking : The measurement of a spacecraft’s position and motion using radio, optical, or other observations. Ground stations infer trajectory from signal timing, frequency, and direction.
Voyager 1 : NASA’s 1977 interstellar probe, the most distant human-made spacecraft from Earth. Its faint, delayed transmissions demonstrate the limits of long-range radio links.
Lunar and deep space optical communications : NASA technology demonstrations testing laser communication links with spacecraft near the Moon and beyond. Demonstrations test whether optical links can supplement radio for high-rate mission data.
Radio communication : The transmission of information using radio waves, typically by modulating a carrier signal. Most deep-space links use radio because it works across vacuum and through planetary atmospheres.
Signal-to-noise ratio : The ratio of a signal’s power to the power of background noise in a measurement. It governs how reliably weak spacecraft signals can be distinguished from noise.
Telemetry : The remote measurement and transmission of data about a system’s status or environment. Spacecraft telemetry reports instrument readings, temperatures, power, and faults to Earth.
Parker Solar Probe : NASA’s spacecraft studying the Sun from close solar orbits, launched in 2018. Its heat-resistant design and changing distance create unusual communication constraints.
Interstellar probe : A proposed spacecraft mission designed to travel far beyond the heliosphere into interstellar space. Extreme range raises questions about antenna size, power, autonomy, and detectable return signals.
