Degree (angle)

A degree is a unit of plane angle equal to one three-hundred-sixtieth of a full turn. It is subdivided into 60 arcminutes, each of which is subdivided into 60 arcseconds.

Plane angle: A measure of rotation between two rays in a plane, expressed in units such as degrees or radians. A degree quantifies this geometric quantity.
Degree–radian conversion: The conversion relationship in which 180 degrees equals π radians. It translates degree measurements into the unit used in many formulas.
Babylonian astronomy: The systematic observation and mathematical study of celestial phenomena in ancient Mesopotamia. Its base-60 mathematics helped shape later conventions for dividing circles.
Protractor: An instrument marked with angular graduations for measuring or drawing angles. Its scale commonly marks angles directly in degrees.
Full turn: A complete rotation that returns a ray to its starting direction. A full turn is defined as 360 degrees.
Arc length: The distance along a curve between two points on that curve. A central angle in degrees determines a circle's corresponding arc as a fraction of its circumference.
Hipparchus: A Greek astronomer of the second century BCE known for mathematical astronomy and star cataloging. His work helped establish the 360-part division of the circle in Greek astronomy.
Compass (navigation): An instrument that indicates direction relative to magnetic north or another reference. Bearings are often reported as degree measurements around a horizon.
Arcminute: A unit of angular measure equal to one-sixtieth of a degree. It is the first conventional subdivision of a degree.
Sector (geometry): The region of a circle bounded by two radii and the arc between them. Its area is proportional to the central angle measured in degrees.
