Degree of unsaturation

Degree of unsaturation is a molecular-formula measure of the rings and multiple bonds a molecule can contain. It counts hydrogen pairs missing relative to a saturated acyclic structure with the same carbon and heteroatom counts.

Index of hydrogen deficiency: An alternative name for the degree of unsaturation calculated from a molecular formula. It names the same formula-based count and is common in chemistry references.
Molecular formula determination: The process of identifying the elemental composition of a molecule. A reliable formula is the essential input for calculating unsaturation.
Alkane: Acyclic hydrocarbon containing only carbon–carbon single bonds. Alkanes supply the saturated acyclic hydrogen baseline for hydrocarbon calculations.
Hydrogenation: A chemical reaction that adds hydrogen to unsaturated bonds, often using a catalyst. Hydrogenation changes the count by consuming multiple bonds, unlike merely calculating it.
Benzene: An aromatic hydrocarbon with molecular formula C₆H₆ and a six-membered carbon ring. Its four degrees of unsaturation correspond to one ring and three formal double bonds.
Molecular formula: A notation specifying the number of atoms of each element in a molecule. The degree of unsaturation is derived directly from these elemental counts.
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: A spectroscopic method that uses nuclear spin behavior to reveal molecular environments and connectivity. NMR evidence can identify which rings or multiple bonds account for the calculated count.
Alkene: A hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Each carbon–carbon double bond accounts for one degree of unsaturation.
Degree of polymerization: The number of repeating units in a polymer chain or molecule. Despite the similar phrase, polymerization degree counts units rather than missing hydrogen pairs.
Cyclohexene: A six-carbon cyclic alkene with molecular formula C₆H₁₀. Its two degrees come from one ring and one carbon–carbon double bond.
