Knowra Deity Deity A supernatural being worshiped or believed to possess divine power. Deities appear in religions as creators, rulers, ancestors, or forces associated with particular aspects of existence.
Theism : Belief in the existence of one or more gods. Deities are the beings whose existence theism affirms.
Monotheism : Belief in one God, often understood as the sole or supreme divine being. It organizes divine power around one God rather than a plurality of deities.
Anthropomorphism : The attribution of human form, traits, or behavior to nonhuman beings or forces. Many traditions portray deities with human bodies, emotions, or social relationships.
Spirit : A nonphysical being or presence, often understood as distinct from a deity. Spirits may be supernatural without possessing the status or powers attributed to deities.
God : A being conceived as divine, often with supernatural power or authority. God is a common title for a deity, though its meaning varies by tradition.
Polytheism : Religious belief in or worship of multiple gods. It describes traditions in which several deities share divine existence or authority.
Mythology : A body of traditional stories concerning gods, ancestors, origins, or cosmic events. Myths narrate deities’ actions and explain their place in the world.
Angel : A supernatural messenger or servant of God in several religious traditions. Angels are usually distinguished from the deity they serve.
Goddess : A female deity, or a deity associated with femininity. Goddesses are deities whose identities or representations are feminine.
Henotheism : Worship of one god without denying the existence of other gods. It shows how devotion to one deity can coexist with belief in others.
