Dejima

Dejima was an artificial island in Nagasaki that housed the Dutch East India Company’s trading post during Japan’s period of restricted foreign contact.

Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered trading company that operated an extensive commercial and colonial network from 1602 to 1799. Its agents ran the Dutch trading post on Dejima.
Portuguese in Japan: Portuguese merchants and missionaries who reached Japan in the sixteenth century and established early European contact. Their earlier Nagasaki presence helps explain the Dutch post’s later, tightly limited position.
Hendrik Doeff: A Dutch chief factor on Dejima from 1799 to 1817, known for maintaining the post during the Napoleonic Wars. His long tenure helped keep Dutch trade operating when the Netherlands was under French control.
Rangaku: Western learning developed in Japan through the study and translation of Dutch-language books and knowledge. Dejima was the main gateway through which Dutch texts and expertise reached Japanese scholars.
Dejima Dutch Trading Post: The Dutch East India Company’s trading establishment on Dejima, operating from 1641 until the nineteenth century. Its offices, residences, and warehouses formed the working heart of the island.
Tokugawa shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868 under the Tokugawa family. It controlled the foreign trade and movement permitted at Dejima.
Expulsion of the Portuguese from Japan: The Tokugawa government’s removal of Portuguese merchants from Japan in 1639. After their expulsion, Dejima became the principal site of Dutch trade.
Philipp Franz von Siebold: A German physician who worked at Dejima from 1823 to 1829 and studied Japanese nature and society. His medical teaching and collecting made Dejima a center of scientific exchange.
Dutch language: A West Germanic language originating in the Netherlands and spoken in several countries and regions. Dutch became the key European language for Japanese study of Western knowledge.
Dejima Dutch Factory Museum: A museum in Nagasaki housed in a reconstructed Dutch residence on Dejima. Its exhibits interpret the buildings and daily routines of the trading post.
