Delaware

Delaware is a small Mid-Atlantic state on the Atlantic coast, bordered by Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. It remained in the Union during the Civil War while slavery persisted there.

New Sweden: A Swedish colony established along the Delaware River in the seventeenth century. Swedish settlement began the European colonial history of the region that became Delaware.
Delaware General Assembly: The bicameral legislature of the U.S. state of Delaware. Its laws governed slavery and other state affairs during the Civil War.
Caesar Rodney: A Delaware statesman who served as a Continental Congress delegate and governor during the American Revolution. His ride to Philadelphia helped secure Delaware’s vote for independence.
DuPont: An American chemical company founded by Éleuthère Irénée du Pont in Delaware in 1802. Its growth made Delaware a center of American chemical manufacturing.
Maryland: A Mid-Atlantic state bordering Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Maryland shared Delaware’s Union loyalty and slavery during the Civil War.
New Netherland: A Dutch colonial province centered on the Hudson River and extending into parts of the Delaware Valley. Dutch control followed Swedish rule in the Delaware River settlements.
Delaware River: A major river flowing into Delaware Bay between Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The river forms a defining eastern boundary and historic transportation route.
John Dickinson: An American political leader and writer who served as president of Delaware and Pennsylvania. He helped shape Delaware’s early state government and constitution.
Wilmington, Delaware: The largest city in Delaware, located at the confluence of the Christina and Brandywine rivers. Wilmington became the state’s principal industrial and population center.
Pennsylvania: A northeastern U.S. state north and west of Delaware. Pennsylvania’s abolitionist status contrasts with Delaware’s continued slavery before national emancipation.
