Delegation

Delegation is the assignment of authority and responsibility for tasks or decisions to another person or group. The delegator remains accountable for the outcome while the delegate carries out the assigned work.

Delegator: A person who assigns a task or decision-making authority to another person. The delegator defines the assignment and remains accountable for its outcome.
Organizational delegation: The assignment of work or decision authority within an organization. Managers use it to distribute responsibility across teams and reporting lines.
Centralization: The concentration of decision-making authority at higher levels of an organization or system. Centralization keeps decisions with senior authorities instead of distributing them downward.
Employee empowerment: The practice of giving employees greater discretion, resources, and influence over their work. Meaningful delegation can increase employees’ authority to act and solve problems.
Delegate: A person authorized to perform a task or make a decision on another’s behalf. The delegate exercises the authority transferred through delegation.
Delegation of authority: The transfer of specified decision-making power from one person or body to another. This form emphasizes the scope of decisions a delegate may make.
Decentralization: The distribution of authority across lower levels or separate units of an organization or system. Unlike a specific assignment, decentralization changes where authority generally resides.
Leadership development: The growth of skills and judgment needed to guide people and organizations. Delegated assignments give emerging leaders practice with responsibility and decisions.
Accountability: The obligation to explain actions and accept responsibility for results. Delegation transfers work, but ordinarily does not erase the delegator’s accountability.
Delegated legislation: Rules made by an executive authority under powers granted by a legislature. Legislatures delegate rule-making within limits set by enabling statutes.
