Knowra Dell Hymes Dell Hymes Dell Hymes (1927–2009) was an American linguist and anthropologist who founded the ethnography of communication and developed the concept of communicative competence.
Communicative competence : The ability to use language appropriately across social contexts, not merely to form grammatical sentences. Hymes proposed it to counter accounts of language ability limited to grammatical knowledge.
SPEAKING model : A framework that analyzes speech events through setting, participants, ends, act sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms, and genre. Hymes’s mnemonic organizes the contextual dimensions of a communicative event.
Franz Boas : A German-American anthropologist who established influential traditions of cultural and linguistic anthropology. Boasian anthropology shaped the fieldwork tradition in which Hymes developed his approach.
