Delta Works

The Delta Works is a system of dams, sluices, storm-surge barriers, and related structures in the southwestern Netherlands. Built mainly after the 1953 North Sea flood, it protects low-lying areas from coastal flooding.

Oosterscheldekering: A movable storm-surge barrier across the Oosterschelde estuary in the Netherlands. Its gates close during dangerous surges but remain open for ordinary tides.
North Sea flood of 1953: A catastrophic flood that struck the Netherlands, Belgium, and England on 31 January and 1 February 1953. The disaster exposed the vulnerability that prompted the Delta Works.
Delta Programme: A Dutch national program for long-term protection against flooding and water shortages. It extends the Delta Works legacy through ongoing adaptation to future risks.
Hollandse IJsselkering: A movable barrier on the Hollandse IJssel near Rotterdam, completed in 1958. It was the first major Delta Works structure to be completed.
Afsluitdijk: A major Dutch causeway and dam enclosing the former Zuiderzee as the freshwater IJsselmeer. Its permanent closure contrasts with the Delta Works’ movable estuary barriers.
Maeslantkering: A movable storm-surge barrier protecting the port of Rotterdam and surrounding areas. Its floating gates swing shut when exceptionally high water threatens Rotterdam.
Delta Plan: A Dutch flood-protection plan adopted after the 1953 North Sea flood. It set the strategic framework for closing estuaries and strengthening defenses.
Eastern Scheldt National Park: A protected marine area encompassing much of the Eastern Scheldt estuary. The decision to preserve tidal exchange helped sustain this estuary’s natural values.
Volkerakdam: A dam in the southwestern Netherlands that separates the Volkerak from adjoining waters. It closed a major waterway and forms part of the connected Delta Works defenses.
Dike: An embankment built to prevent water from flooding land. Dikes form the continuous defenses that the Delta Works’ structures supplement.
