Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria

The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria is a self-governing administration established during the Syrian civil war. It governs parts of northeastern Syria through institutions associated with Kurdish-led political movements.

Communes of Rojava: Local neighborhood or village bodies in the Rojava model that organize participation and address community affairs. They form the administration’s most local level of participatory governance.
Syrian civil war: An armed conflict that began in Syria in 2011 and drew in domestic and foreign forces. The conflict created the conditions for autonomous institutions to emerge.

Operation Olive Branch: A 2018 Turkish military operation that captured Afrin from Kurdish-led forces. The loss of Afrin exposed the administration’s vulnerability to cross-border military intervention.
