Democratic Progressive Party

The Democratic Progressive Party is a Taiwanese political party founded in 1986 that became the Kuomintang’s principal electoral rival and has governed Taiwan several times.

Tangwai movement: A movement of opposition politicians and activists in Taiwan who challenged Kuomintang rule before party politics was legalized. The party grew out of this opposition network, which organized outside the ruling party.
Presidential elections in Taiwan: Direct national elections that choose Taiwan’s president and vice president for four-year terms. Presidential contests have repeatedly determined whether the DPP or Kuomintang leads the government.
Chen Shui-bian: A Taiwanese politician who became the first president from the Democratic Progressive Party, serving from 2000 to 2008. His election ended the Kuomintang’s uninterrupted control of the presidency.

Taiwan independence movement: A political movement advocating Taiwan’s formal independence or recognition as a sovereign state distinct from China. Its goals overlap with a current within the DPP, though the party’s official positions have varied.
Martial law in Taiwan: The period of military rule in Taiwan from 1949 to 1987, during which the government restricted political opposition. The party was founded before martial law ended, despite the ban on new political parties.
Democratic transition in Taiwan: Taiwan’s shift from Kuomintang one-party rule toward competitive elections and democratic institutions. The DPP’s rise was both a product and a driver of this transition.
