Denazification

Denazification was the Allied postwar program to remove Nazi influence from German society, government, and institutions. It used screening, trials, dismissals, and political reeducation, with policies varying across occupation zones.

Directive 38: A 1946 Allied Control Council directive that established uniform categories for classifying and punishing people implicated in Nazism. It formalized a shared classification framework after occupation-zone procedures had diverged.
American occupation zone: The part of occupied Germany administered by the United States after World War II. Its extensive questionnaires and tribunals made it the most systematic early denazification effort.
Nazi continuity in postwar Germany: The persistence of former Nazi personnel, practices, or networks in German institutions after 1945. Reinstatement and incomplete screening limited how fully the program removed Nazi influence.
Collective guilt: The attribution of moral or legal responsibility to an entire group for actions committed by some members. Denazification raised the question of how to distinguish individual responsibility from national complicity.
Spruchkammer: A German denazification tribunal that assessed individuals’ involvement in Nazi organizations and assigned legal categories. These tribunals handled much of the later screening process, especially in the American zone.
British occupation zone: The part of occupied Germany administered by Britain after World War II. British authorities generally relied more on administrative screening than mass tribunal proceedings.
Central Office of the State Justice Administrations for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes: A West German agency founded in 1958 to investigate Nazi crimes and identify cases for prosecution. Its later investigations exposed how many crimes and perpetrators had escaped early accountability.
Amnesty: A government’s decision to forgive or remove legal penalties for specified offenses or groups of offenders. Amnesties and classification changes reduced penalties for many people screened after the war.
Persilschein: An informal certificate or favorable testimony used to portray someone as politically untainted or only marginally implicated. Such attestations could help defendants secure lighter classifications or regain employment.
French occupation zone: The part of occupied Germany administered by France after World War II. French policy varied locally and often placed less emphasis on a uniform, centralized program.
