Deng Xiaoping

Deng Xiaoping was a Chinese Communist revolutionary and leader who shaped China’s economic reforms and exercised paramount political influence from the late 1970s through the 1980s.

Chinese economic reform: The transformation of China’s economy from centralized planning toward markets and greater international trade, beginning in 1978. Deng’s leadership launched the reform era while retaining Communist Party rule.
Four Modernizations: A Chinese program to modernize agriculture, industry, national defense, and science and technology. Deng made this program central to rebuilding China after the Cultural Revolution.
