Denisovan

Denisovans were an extinct archaic human population identified through fossils and ancient DNA. They interbred with modern humans, leaving genetic traces especially in populations across Asia and Oceania.

Denisova Cave: A cave in Siberia’s Altai Mountains where fossils and artifacts associated with Denisovans were discovered. Its sediments yielded the first recognized Denisovan fossils and genetic material.
Admixture: The mixing of genetic material between previously differentiated populations through interbreeding. Interbreeding introduced Denisovan DNA into the ancestors of some modern human populations.
Denisovan genome: The reconstructed genetic sequence of Denisovans, derived from ancient remains and comparisons with living human genomes. The first high-coverage genome established Denisovans as a distinct archaic population.
Melanesians: The Indigenous peoples of Melanesia, a region of islands in the southwestern Pacific. Many Melanesian populations carry substantial Denisovan ancestry.

Denisovan ancestry in Southeast Asia: Genetic evidence for Denisovan-related ancestry in present-day populations of Southeast Asia and nearby regions. The ancestry suggests Denisovan relatives ranged widely, but their fossils remain difficult to identify.
