Denmark–Norway

Denmark–Norway was a composite monarchy whose kingdoms shared a ruler from 1536 until the Treaty of Kiel transferred Norway to Sweden in 1814.

Oldenburg dynasty: A European royal house that ruled Denmark and Norway from the fifteenth century into the nineteenth century. Its monarchs held the shared crown throughout Denmark–Norway’s existence.
Kalmar Union: A union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a shared monarch from 1397 until its dissolution in the early sixteenth century. It established a precedent for uniting the Scandinavian kingdoms under one ruler.
Treaty of Kiel: The 1814 treaty in which Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden while retaining Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. It formally ended the shared monarchy after the Napoleonic Wars.
Sweden–Finland: The historical political union in which Finland formed part of the Swedish realm until its conquest by Russia in 1809. Its dissolution offers a parallel to Norway’s separation from a Scandinavian composite monarchy.
Dano-Norwegian Navy: The naval forces of Denmark–Norway, organized around bases in Copenhagen and operating across northern European waters. A joint fleet defended the monarchy’s maritime territories and trade routes.
Christian III of Denmark: King of Denmark and Norway from 1537 to 1559, whose rule established Lutheranism in the realm. His victory in the Count’s Feud secured the arrangements that made Norway subordinate to Denmark.
Swedish-Norwegian War: The 1814 conflict in which Sweden compelled Norway to accept a union with the Swedish king. It followed Norway’s declaration of independence after Denmark ceded it to Sweden.
Union between Sweden and Norway: A personal union of Sweden and Norway that lasted from 1814 until its peaceful dissolution in 1905. It replaced Denmark–Norway’s arrangement with a different shared-monarch union.
Norwegian Constitution of 1814: Norway’s constitution, adopted at Eidsvoll on 17 May 1814 during its brief bid for independence. It emerged from the political crisis following the monarchy’s collapse.
Count’s Feud: A Danish civil war fought from 1534 to 1536 over the succession and the restoration of Christian II. Its outcome enabled Christian III to consolidate control over Denmark and Norway.
