Dental extraction

Dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw. It may be performed for disease, injury, crowding, or other dental problems.

Tooth luxation: Tooth luxation is the controlled loosening of a tooth within its socket by applying force to its supporting tissues. Luxation expands the socket and disrupts periodontal fibers before forceps remove the tooth.
Tooth decay: Tooth decay is the progressive destruction of tooth structure by acids produced when oral bacteria metabolize sugars. Extensive decay may leave too little sound tooth structure for repair.
Root canal treatment: Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, then cleans, fills, and seals the root canal system. It can preserve a tooth that might otherwise be removed because of pulp disease.
Periodontal ligament: The periodontal ligament is connective tissue that attaches a tooth root to the surrounding alveolar bone. Its fibers resist movement and must be disrupted as a tooth is loosened.
Postoperative pain: Postoperative pain is discomfort that occurs after a surgical or dental procedure. Pain commonly follows extraction as local tissues recover.
Dental forceps: Dental forceps are hinged instruments designed to grasp and move teeth during extraction. Forceps deliver controlled movement once the tooth has been loosened.
Periodontitis: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that damages the tissues and bone supporting teeth. Severe loss of support can make a tooth loose and unsuitable for retention.
Dental restoration: Dental restoration repairs or replaces damaged tooth structure using materials such as fillings, crowns, or inlays. Restoration retains the tooth when enough healthy structure remains.
Alveolar process: The alveolar process is the part of the jawbone that forms and supports the tooth sockets. Its shape and condition affect access to the tooth and healing after removal.
Postoperative bleeding: Postoperative bleeding is bleeding that continues or recurs after a medical or dental procedure. Bleeding control is a central part of immediate care after tooth removal.
