Dental implant

A surgically placed fixture, usually made of titanium or ceramic, that anchors a replacement tooth or dental prosthesis to the jaw. Its stability depends on integration with surrounding bone.

Osseointegration: Direct structural and functional connection between living bone and an implant surface. Bone integration is the biological basis of long-term implant anchorage.
Dental prosthesis: An artificial device that replaces missing teeth or associated oral structures. Implants can support several kinds of tooth-replacing prostheses.
Single-tooth implant: A dental implant and crown used to replace one missing tooth. It replaces an individual tooth without relying on neighboring teeth for support.
Dental bridge: A fixed restoration that replaces missing teeth by attaching to supporting teeth or implants. A tooth-supported bridge uses neighboring teeth, unlike a fixture anchored in jawbone.
Dental implant surgery: A surgical procedure that places an implant fixture in the jawbone. Surgical placement positions the fixture where it can heal into bone.
Alveolar bone: The portion of the jawbone that houses and supports the teeth. The implant is anchored in the bone that normally supports tooth roots.
Implant-supported bridge: A fixed dental bridge anchored by implants rather than natural teeth. It replaces several teeth while using fewer fixtures than individual implants.
Removable partial denture: A removable prosthesis that replaces some missing teeth and is retained by remaining teeth or oral tissues. It replaces some teeth without surgically placing fixtures in the jaw.
Dental abutment: A connector that joins a dental implant fixture to a crown or other prosthesis. The abutment links the embedded fixture to the visible restoration.
Dental implant crown: A crown attached to a dental implant to replace the visible part of a missing tooth. This restoration is the tooth-shaped component commonly supported by one implant.
