Dentures

Dentures are removable dental prostheses that replace some or all missing natural teeth and surrounding gum tissue. They restore chewing and speech and support facial appearance.

Complete denture: A removable prosthesis that replaces all teeth in one dental arch, with a base shaped to fit the gums. It replaces every tooth in an upper or lower arch.
Denture retention: The resistance of a denture to movement away from the tissues or structures supporting it. It describes how dentures remain seated during speaking and eating.
Denture fabrication: The clinical and laboratory process of designing and making a denture for an individual mouth. It turns oral measurements and a treatment plan into a fitted prosthesis.
Dental implant: A surgically placed fixture, usually made of titanium or another biocompatible material, that supports a dental restoration. Implants are fixed in bone, unlike conventional removable dentures.
Edentulism: The condition of having lost some or all natural teeth. Dentures are commonly used to restore function after partial or complete tooth loss.
Partial denture: A removable prosthesis that replaces some missing teeth while fitting around remaining natural teeth. It fills gaps while retaining natural teeth in the arch.
Denture stability: A denture's resistance to sideways or rotational movement during function. It limits rocking and shifting as chewing forces vary.
Denture fitting: The assessment and adjustment of a denture so it rests and functions appropriately in the mouth. A precise fit supports comfort, retention, and effective use.
Dental bridge: A fixed dental prosthesis that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to teeth or implants. A bridge stays fixed in place rather than being removed for cleaning.
Masticatory efficiency: The effectiveness with which the chewing system breaks food into smaller particles. Dentures can improve chewing, though performance differs from natural teeth.
