Deodorant

A product applied to the body to mask or reduce unpleasant odor, especially underarm odor. It may act on odor molecules, odor-producing microbes, or the perception of scent.

Antiperspirant: A product that reduces sweat reaching the skin, usually by temporarily blocking sweat ducts. Unlike deodorant alone, it targets moisture production as well as the conditions that support odor.
Apocrine sweat gland: A sweat gland concentrated in areas such as the armpits that releases a protein- and lipid-rich secretion. Its secretions provide precursors that skin microbes can convert into characteristic underarm odors.
Mum (deodorant): An American underarm deodorant introduced in the late nineteenth century and among the earliest commercial products of its kind. Its early marketing helped establish deodorant as a purchasable solution to underarm odor.
Deodorant stick: A solid or gel deodorant dispensed by rubbing a container directly against the skin. It is a common format for applying deodorant to underarms with little product dispersal into the air.
Fragrance-free product: A product formulated without added fragrance ingredients, though it may still have an inherent scent. It offers an alternative when fragrance masking is unwanted or causes skin reactions.
Aluminum chlorohydrate: An aluminum salt used in many antiperspirants to reduce sweat reaching the skin. It is a common active ingredient in products combining sweat control with odor management.
Eccrine sweat gland: A widespread sweat gland that releases watery fluid primarily for cooling the body. Its moisture contributes to the damp skin environment in which underarm odor develops.
Odorono: An early commercial antiperspirant brand whose twentieth-century advertising promoted underarm sweat control. Its campaigns helped make visible sweat and odor concerns part of modern consumer culture.
Deodorant spray: A deodorant dispensed as a fine spray, either from an aerosol can or a pump bottle. Sprays apply fragrance and odor-control ingredients without direct contact with the skin.
Antibacterial soap: A cleansing product containing ingredients intended to reduce bacteria on the skin. It removes or reduces microbes during washing rather than providing ongoing odor control after application.
