Knowra Depersonalization Depersonalization Depersonalization is an experience of detachment from one’s thoughts, feelings, body, or actions. Reality usually remains recognizable, even when the self feels unfamiliar or unreal.
Depersonalization-derealization disorder : A mental disorder involving persistent or recurrent depersonalization, derealization, or both, with significant distress or impairment. This diagnosis applies when depersonalization or derealization becomes persistent or recurrent and disrupts life.
Psychosis : A state involving impaired reality testing, which may include delusions or hallucinations. In depersonalization, the sense of unreality is usually recognized as a feeling rather than accepted as literal fact.
Trauma : An experience or event that overwhelms a person’s capacity to cope and may have lasting psychological effects. Depersonalization can occur during or after trauma, though trauma is not its only possible context.
