Deportation of the Crimean Tatars

The Soviet Union's 1944 mass forced removal of Crimean Tatars from Crimea, chiefly to Uzbekistan. The operation caused extensive deaths and lasting displacement.

NKVD: The Soviet Union's internal security and police agency, responsible for state security, policing, and mass repression. NKVD troops organized and carried out the deportation under Lavrentiy Beria's direction.
Uzbekistan: A Central Asian republic of the Soviet Union from 1924 until 1991, and an independent country thereafter. Most deported Crimean Tatars were sent there and remained for decades.
Nazi occupation of Crimea: The German and Romanian occupation of Crimea from 1941 to 1944 during World War II. The Soviet state used alleged collaboration during the occupation to justify collective deportation.
Deportation of the Chechens and Ingush: The Soviet Union's 1944 forced deportation of Chechens and Ingush from the North Caucasus to Central Asia. It was another wartime collective deportation ordered by Stalin and carried out by the NKVD.
