Desert ecology

Desert ecology studies how organisms interact with one another and with the physical conditions of arid environments, where water scarcity shapes survival and ecosystem processes.

Water balance: The relationship between water gained and water lost by an organism or ecosystem. Desert organisms must limit water loss or exploit brief opportunities to gain it.
Aridity: A persistent deficit of precipitation relative to water loss through evaporation and transpiration. Aridity is the defining climatic constraint underlying desert ecosystems.
Ecological restoration: The practice of assisting the recovery of degraded, damaged, or destroyed ecosystems. Restoring desert systems requires matching interventions to scarce water and slow biological recovery.
Sonoran Desert: A North American desert spanning parts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its summer monsoon and winter rains support unusually diverse desert communities.
Soil erosion: The removal of soil by water, wind, or other forces. Loss of sparse vegetation can expose desert soils to wind and runoff.
CAM photosynthesis: A photosynthetic pathway that takes in carbon dioxide at night and stores it for daytime use. Many desert plants reduce daytime water loss by opening their stomata at night.
Potential evapotranspiration: The amount of water that could evaporate and transpire if sufficient water were available. Comparing it with precipitation helps quantify the dryness that structures desert habitats.
Desertification: Land degradation in drylands resulting from climatic variation and human activities. Ecological evidence helps distinguish natural aridity from degradation and identify its drivers.
Mojave Desert: A desert of the southwestern United States, characterized by cold winters and distinctive yucca woodlands. The Joshua tree and other specialists show how climate and soils shape regional desert life.
Habitat fragmentation: The division of continuous habitat into smaller, isolated patches. Roads, development, and infrastructure can divide desert habitats and disrupt movement.
