Desert Fathers

The Desert Fathers were early Christian hermits and monks, chiefly in Egypt from the third century onward, whose ascetic lives and teachings shaped Christian monasticism.

Christian asceticism: The renunciation of bodily comforts or worldly pursuits for religious discipline and spiritual devotion. The Fathers made ascetic renunciation a sustained way of life in the desert.
