Design for manufacturability

Design for manufacturability is the practice of shaping products so available production processes can make them reliably, economically, and at required quality.

Design for assembly: A design approach that simplifies and reduces the effort required to assemble a product. It complements manufacturability by minimizing handling, fastening, and assembly errors.
Design for injection molding: The adaptation of part geometry and materials to the constraints of injection molding. Draft, wall thickness, and undercuts determine whether molded parts release and fill reliably.
Manufacturing process: A method or sequence of operations used to transform materials into products. The chosen process sets the practical limits a design must accommodate.
Design for testability: The practice of making a product easier to test and diagnose during development or production. Test access can conflict with compact layouts even when production itself is straightforward.
Design for X: A family of design approaches that optimize products for specified life-cycle goals or constraints. Manufacturability is one objective within this broader family of design priorities.
Tolerancing: The specification of permissible variation in a part’s dimensions and other characteristics. Tolerances determine whether parts can be produced consistently and fit together.
Design for additive manufacturing: The adaptation of products to the capabilities and constraints of additive manufacturing processes. Layer-wise production permits geometries that conventional manufacturing may not produce economically.
Manufacturing engineering: The engineering discipline concerned with designing and improving systems that produce goods. It supplies the process knowledge used to assess whether a product can be made.
Design for serviceability: The practice of making products easier to inspect, maintain, repair, or replace parts in. Service access may require features that add manufacturing steps or complexity.
Product lifecycle management: The coordination of product data and processes across a product’s development and life cycle. Manufacturing feedback and design revisions become more manageable through shared lifecycle information.
