Desorption

Desorption is the release of atoms, ions, or molecules from a surface into a surrounding gas or liquid. It reverses adsorption by breaking the interactions that held particles at the surface.

Adsorption: Adsorption is the accumulation of atoms, ions, or molecules at a surface. It is the reverse process: particles leave rather than accumulate at a surface.
Vacuum technology: The methods and equipment used to create and maintain low-pressure environments. Desorption from chamber walls can release gas and limit achievable vacuum.
Surface science: The study of the physical and chemical properties of solid surfaces and interfaces. Desorption is one of the central processes used to probe surface properties.
Absorption: Absorption is the uptake of a substance into the bulk of another material. Unlike desorption from a surface, absorption concerns entry into a material's interior.
Desorption energy: The energy required for an adsorbed species to leave a surface. It sets the energetic barrier that desorbing particles must overcome.
Temperature-programmed desorption: A surface-analysis method that heats a sample at a controlled rate while monitoring released species. It applies desorption to identify surface-bound substances and their binding strengths.
Surface energy: The excess energy associated with a material's surface compared with its interior. It helps determine how strongly a surface interacts with adsorbed species.
Desorption electrospray ionization: An ambient mass-spectrometry technique that extracts and ionizes surface compounds with charged solvent droplets. It couples surface release to ionization, a specialized analytical use.
Thermal desorption spectroscopy: A technique that heats a sample and measures species released from its surface as temperature rises. Its temperature-dependent release signals reveal binding energies and surface coverage.
Outgassing: The release of gas from materials exposed to vacuum or changing environmental conditions. Desorbed molecules are a major source of gas released by vacuum materials.
