Despotate of Epirus

The Despotate of Epirus was a Byzantine Greek successor state established in the Balkans after the Fourth Crusade. Based chiefly in Epirus, it competed with other Byzantine successor states to restore Byzantine rule.

Fourth Crusade: A crusade diverted to Constantinople, which crusaders captured and sacked in 1204. Its conquest of Constantinople left former Byzantine territories open to new Greek-led states.
Michael II Komnenos Doukas: A thirteenth-century ruler of Epirus who restored much of its power after internal dynastic conflict. His reign shows how the state recovered territory through diplomacy and military action.
Empire of Nicaea: A Byzantine Greek successor state in western Asia Minor that recaptured Constantinople in 1261. Nicaea ultimately restored the empire, while Epirus failed to secure the imperial capital.
Battle of Klokotnitsa: A 1230 battle in which Bulgarian forces under Ivan Asen II defeated the army of Epirus’s ruler Theodore Komnenos Doukas. The defeat sharply curtailed Epirus’s expansion and strengthened Bulgaria in the Balkans.
Fall of Constantinople (1204): The crusader capture of Constantinople in 1204, which ended the Byzantine Empire’s control of the city. The loss of the imperial capital enabled Michael Komnenos Doukas to establish power in Epirus.
Battle of Pelagonia: A 1259 battle in which the Empire of Nicaea defeated a coalition including Epirus and the Principality of Achaea. The defeat weakened Epirus and helped Nicaea advance toward Constantinople.
Empire of Trebizond: A Byzantine Greek successor empire founded on the southern Black Sea coast in 1204. Trebizond, like Epirus, survived outside Constantinople but pursued a separate imperial claim.
Thessalonica: A major Greek city and port that became a center of Byzantine political and religious life. Epirus briefly controlled Thessalonica, extending its reach into Macedonia.
Michael I Komnenos Doukas: The founder and first ruler of the Despotate of Epirus, who established his authority around Arta after 1204. His consolidation of western Greek territories began the state’s political history.
Treaty of Nymphaeum (1261): An agreement between the Empire of Nicaea and Genoa that granted Genoese commercial privileges in return for naval support. Nicaea’s resources and alliances formed part of the wider contest that constrained Epirus.
