Détente

Détente was a period of reduced tension and increased diplomatic engagement between the United States and the Soviet Union, especially during the 1970s.

Strategic Arms Limitation Talks: Negotiations between the United States and Soviet Union that produced agreements limiting some strategic nuclear weapons. These talks were the central negotiating channel for limiting the superpowers’ nuclear competition.
Cuban Missile Crisis: A 1962 confrontation between the United States and Soviet Union over Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. Its near-war exposed the risks that later crisis-management efforts sought to reduce.
Richard Nixon: The 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. Nixon made arms control and engagement with Moscow central features of his foreign policy.
Containment: A United States strategy of preventing the expansion of Soviet power and communist influence. Détente modified how containment was pursued without replacing its aim of limiting Soviet influence.
SALT I: A 1972 agreement that limited antiballistic missile systems and froze certain strategic missile launchers. Its signed agreements gave détente a concrete arms-control achievement.
Nuclear arms race: The competition among states to develop and accumulate increasingly powerful nuclear weapons and delivery systems. Détente emerged partly from the costs and dangers of this escalating competition.
Henry Kissinger: An American diplomat and national security adviser who served as secretary of state under Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Kissinger helped shape the administration’s strategy of triangular diplomacy and negotiation with the Soviet Union.
New Cold War: A renewed period of heightened United States–Soviet rivalry beginning in the late 1970s and continuing into the 1980s. This renewed confrontation marked the breakdown of the period associated with détente.
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty: A 1972 treaty that restricted United States and Soviet deployment of systems designed to intercept strategic ballistic missiles. Restricting missile defenses helped preserve mutual vulnerability, a premise of strategic stability.
Mutual assured destruction: A deterrence condition in which opposing nuclear powers can each inflict unacceptable destruction after suffering a first strike. The prospect of mutual devastation gave both governments an incentive to negotiate limits.
