Deuterium

Deuterium is a stable isotope of hydrogen whose nucleus contains one proton and one neutron. Its atomic mass is approximately twice that of ordinary hydrogen.

Isotope: An isotope is a form of an element whose atoms have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Deuterium is hydrogen’s isotope with one neutron in its nucleus.
Deuterium–tritium fusion: Deuterium–tritium fusion is a nuclear reaction in which deuterium and tritium nuclei combine, producing helium and a neutron. Deuterium acts as one of the two fuel nuclei in this high-energy reaction.
Heavy water: Heavy water is water in which the hydrogen atoms are deuterium, with the formula D₂O. It is the best-known bulk compound made with deuterium.
Harold Urey: Harold Urey was an American chemist who discovered deuterium in 1931 and received the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Urey identified the isotope by detecting its enriched presence in liquid hydrogen.
Protium: Protium is the most abundant hydrogen isotope, with a nucleus containing one proton and no neutrons. It is the ordinary hydrogen isotope from which deuterium differs by one neutron.
Hydrogen: Hydrogen is the chemical element with atomic number one, found in several isotopic forms. Deuterium belongs to hydrogen because its nucleus contains one proton.
Deuterium–deuterium fusion: Deuterium–deuterium fusion is a family of nuclear reactions between two deuterons, producing helium-3 or tritium and other products. It shows that deuterium nuclei can fuse without a tritium partner.
Deuterated solvent: A deuterated solvent is a solvent in which some or all hydrogen atoms have been replaced by deuterium. Such solvents reduce ordinary hydrogen signals in nuclear magnetic resonance measurements.
Ferdinand Brickwedde: Ferdinand Brickwedde was an American physicist who helped concentrate and identify deuterium in hydrogen samples. His cryogenic work helped Urey isolate the heavier hydrogen isotope.
Tritium: Tritium is a radioactive hydrogen isotope whose nucleus contains one proton and two neutrons. It is the heavier radioactive counterpart to stable deuterium.
