Deutschlandlied

The Deutschlandlied is a song whose third stanza has served as Germany’s national anthem since 1990. August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote its lyrics.

August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben: A German poet and philologist who wrote the Deutschlandlied’s lyrics in 1841. He wrote the lyrics on Heligoland, when the German states were politically divided.
German nationalism: A political movement promoting German national unity, identity, or sovereignty. The song’s original call for unity emerged from nineteenth-century nationalism.
National anthem: A song officially or conventionally associated with a country and used at public ceremonies. The Deutschlandlied’s third stanza is Germany’s national anthem.
German Empire: The German nation-state established in 1871 and dissolved after World War I in 1918. The Deutschlandlied became widely established as a national song during the empire.
Joseph Haydn: An Austrian composer whose melody for a hymn to Francis II later became the Deutschlandlied’s tune. His 1797 melody supplied the song’s music, decades before Fallersleben wrote its words.
Nazi Germany: The German state under Adolf Hitler’s dictatorship from 1933 to 1945. The Nazi regime paired the first stanza with the Horst-Wessel-Lied at official events.
