Developmental psychology

Developmental psychology studies how thinking, emotion, behavior, and relationships change across the human lifespan, and how biological, social, and cultural influences shape those changes.

Development: The process through which organisms or systems change over time in structure, function, or capacity. Developmental psychology examines change across human lives rather than treating behavior as fixed.
Piaget's theory of cognitive development: Jean Piaget’s account of how children build knowledge through qualitatively distinct stages of thinking. It models cognitive change as children reorganize their understanding of the world.
