Devolution in the United Kingdom

Devolution in the United Kingdom is the transfer of legislative and administrative powers from the UK Parliament to institutions in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These institutions exercise powers granted by UK law while the UK Parliament retains authority to legislate on devolved matters.

Scottish Parliament: Scotland’s elected legislature, established in 1999, makes laws on devolved matters. It exercises Scotland’s devolved legislative powers and can vary some taxes.
Scotland Act 1998: The UK statute that established the Scottish Parliament and defined its powers. It provided the legal basis for Scotland’s modern devolution settlement.
Federalism: A system of government that constitutionally divides authority between a central government and regional governments. Unlike a federal constitution, UK devolution rests on powers granted by Parliament.
