Dextroamphetamine

Dextroamphetamine is the dextrorotatory enantiomer of amphetamine, a central nervous system stimulant prescribed for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy.

Dopamine transporter: A membrane protein that moves dopamine from the synaptic space back into nerve cells. Dextroamphetamine interacts with this transporter to increase dopamine outside neurons.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that impairs functioning. Dextroamphetamine is prescribed to reduce core symptoms in some people with ADHD.
Levoamphetamine: The levorotatory enantiomer of amphetamine, with a different balance of central and peripheral effects. It is the other amphetamine enantiomer and contrasts with dextroamphetamine’s stronger central effects.
Stimulant use disorder: A substance-use disorder involving continued stimulant use despite significant harm or loss of control. Dextroamphetamine has misuse and dependence risks, especially outside prescribed use.
Enantiomer: One of a pair of stereoisomers that are mirror images and cannot be superimposed. Dextroamphetamine’s distinction from levoamphetamine is a matter of molecular handedness.
Norepinephrine transporter: A membrane protein that clears norepinephrine from synapses into nerve cells. Dextroamphetamine also alters norepinephrine transport through this protein.
Narcolepsy: A chronic neurological disorder involving excessive daytime sleepiness and, in some cases, cataplexy. Dextroamphetamine can promote wakefulness as a treatment for daytime sleepiness.
Mixed amphetamine salts: A prescription mixture containing dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine salts in a specified ratio. Unlike pure dextroamphetamine products, this mixture includes both amphetamine enantiomers.
Amphetamine psychosis: A psychotic state associated with amphetamine exposure, often involving paranoia or hallucinations. High doses or prolonged misuse can produce severe psychiatric effects.
Stereochemistry: The study of the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules. Its principles explain the structural difference between amphetamine’s two enantiomers.
