Dhammapada

The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 verses on Buddhist teachings, included in the Pali Canon’s Khuddaka Nikaya. Its short poetic chapters address conduct, wisdom, and liberation.

Pali Canon: The Pali-language collection of scriptures preserved by Theravada Buddhism. The Dhammapada is one small work within this larger scriptural collection.
Buddhist ethics: Moral principles and practices grounded in Buddhist teachings about suffering, intention, and liberation. Many verses express ethical guidance through contrasts between harmful and wholesome conduct.
Oral tradition in Buddhism: The transmission of Buddhist teachings through memorization and recitation before and alongside written texts. The verses belong to a tradition transmitted and arranged over time.
