Dhimmī

A non-Muslim subject granted protected status under certain conditions in premodern Islamic states, traditionally in exchange for payment of the jizya and acceptance of specified legal obligations.

Jizya: A tax historically levied on certain non-Muslim subjects under Muslim rule. Payment was traditionally tied to the protection and obligations associated with dhimmī status.
Constitution of Medina: An early agreement regulating relations among groups in Medina during Muhammad's leadership. It offers an early precedent for negotiated protection of non-Muslim communities, though not the later legal category itself.
