Di Xin

Di Xin was the last king of the Shang dynasty, traditionally called King Zhou of Shang. His defeat by the Zhou around 1046 BCE ended Shang rule.

Battle of Muye: The battle in which Zhou forces defeated Shang forces, conventionally dated to about 1046 BCE. Its outcome ended Di Xin’s rule and opened the way for Zhou government.
Daji: A consort of Di Xin remembered in later accounts as a corrupting influence at the Shang court. Her legendary association with Di Xin helped shape stories of his alleged tyranny.
Records of the Grand Historian: A history of early China compiled by Sima Qian in the first century BCE. Its Shang annals preserve a detailed, influential account of Di Xin’s reign and defeat.
Wu Ding: A Shang king whose reign is especially well documented by oracle-bone inscriptions. Evidence for his reign contrasts with the sparse contemporary record of Di Xin’s character.
Shang dynasty: The late Bronze Age Chinese dynasty that ruled before the Zhou and left the earliest securely attested Chinese writing. Di Xin’s reign was its final chapter.
Sima Qian: A Han dynasty historian who compiled the Records of the Grand Historian. His account became a major source for later narratives of Di Xin and the Shang collapse.
Bamboo Annals: A chronicle of early Chinese rulers known through an excavated manuscript and later transmitted versions. Its chronology offers a distinct tradition for the Shang-Zhou transition.
King You of Zhou: A late Western Zhou king traditionally blamed for weakening royal authority and hastening the dynasty’s fall. Like Di Xin, he became a cautionary figure whose personal failings were said to explain dynastic collapse.
Zhou dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that followed the Shang and ruled from about 1046 to 256 BCE. Its founding followed the conquest of Di Xin’s Shang state.
King Wu of Zhou: The founder of the Zhou dynasty who led the campaign against the Shang. Zhou tradition cast his victory over Di Xin as a justified transfer of rule.
