Diadochi

The Diadochi were Alexander the Great’s generals and other successors who fought to control his empire after his death in 323 BCE. Their wars ended in a divided Hellenistic world ruled by successor kingdoms.

Perdiccas: A Macedonian general who served as regent for Alexander’s empire after Alexander’s death. He tried to preserve the empire under a regency and became an early target of rival commanders.
Babylonian Partition: The 323 BCE settlement assigning offices and satrapies after Alexander’s death. It formally distributed authority but left the central kingship and regency contested.
Alexander the Great: King of Macedon who conquered the Persian Empire and created a realm stretching from Greece to India. His conquests gave the successors an empire to contest, but his death left its leadership unresolved.
Ptolemaic Kingdom: A Hellenistic kingdom based in Egypt, ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty from 305 BCE to 30 BCE. Ptolemy’s seizure of Egypt became a lasting kingdom born from the imperial breakup.
Ptolemy I Soter: A Macedonian general of Alexander who founded the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. His seizure of Egypt established one of the most durable successor kingdoms.
Triparadisus: A 321 BCE settlement that reorganized the empire’s leadership and satrapies after Perdiccas’s defeat. It replaced the first settlement and rearranged power among the surviving commanders.
Death of Alexander the Great: Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BCE, aged 32, without an adult heir. His death triggered the succession crisis that brought the Diadochi into conflict.
Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic empire founded by Seleucus I, spanning parts of western and central Asia. It carried Seleucus’s share of Alexander’s conquests into a powerful successor state.
Seleucus I Nicator: A Macedonian officer of Alexander who founded the Seleucid Empire. His eventual control of Babylon and much of Asia created the largest successor realm.
Wars of the Diadochi: A series of conflicts among Alexander’s successors from 322 to 281 BCE. These wars were the main means by which the successors tested and expanded their claims.
