Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a handbook published by the American Psychiatric Association that classifies mental disorders and provides diagnostic criteria for clinical use.

Diagnostic criteria: Specified symptoms, duration, exclusions, and thresholds used to determine whether a diagnosis applies. DSM diagnoses depend on explicit symptom thresholds and other stated requirements.
American Psychiatric Association: A professional organization of psychiatrists in the United States that publishes the DSM. The association authors and publishes the manual.
Psychiatric diagnosis: The process of identifying and naming patterns of mental or behavioural symptoms as disorders. The DSM supplies a prominent framework for psychiatric diagnosis.
