Diagnostic microbiology detects and identifies microorganisms that cause infection in clinical specimens. Its findings help clinicians diagnose infections and choose treatment.

Microbial culture: The growth of microorganisms in controlled conditions for study or identification. Growing an organism from a specimen can establish its presence and provide material for identification and susceptibility testing.
Clinical specimen: Material collected from a patient for examination or laboratory testing. The specimen’s source and collection quality determine which organisms and results are clinically meaningful.
Antimicrobial stewardship: Coordinated efforts to improve the selection, dosing, and duration of antimicrobial treatment. Timely identification and susceptibility results support narrower, more appropriate therapy.
Culture-independent diagnostic test: A test that detects pathogens or their components without growing them in culture. These tests can be faster than culture but may not yield an isolate for further testing.
Antimicrobial resistance: The ability of microorganisms to survive or grow despite exposure to antimicrobial drugs. Detecting resistance reliably and quickly remains essential as resistant pathogens spread.
Gram stain: A differential staining method that classifies bacteria by cell-wall properties and reveals their shape and arrangement. This rapid stain can guide early treatment while culture results are pending.
Pathogen: A biological agent capable of causing disease in a host. Diagnostic microbiology focuses on detecting infectious agents rather than all microorganisms.
Sepsis: Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection. Rapid blood-culture and molecular results can help identify the cause during urgent treatment.
Metagenomic next-generation sequencing: Sequencing of genetic material from a sample to detect and characterize organisms without targeting one species. It can investigate infections when routine targeted tests fail to identify a cause.
Diagnostic stewardship: The appropriate use of diagnostic tests to improve clinical decisions and reduce unnecessary testing. Choosing the right specimen and test can prevent misleading results and wasted treatment.
