Dialect continuum

A chain of geographically adjacent language varieties in which neighboring varieties are mutually intelligible, while varieties farther apart may not be.

Mutual intelligibility: The ability of speakers of different language varieties to understand one another without special study. Neighboring varieties can be mutually intelligible even when distant varieties in the same chain are not.
West Germanic dialect continuum: A historical continuum of West Germanic varieties extending across parts of continental Europe. It is a classic example of neighboring varieties crossing modern national and standard-language boundaries.
Dialect: A language variety associated with a region or social group and distinguished by systematic linguistic features. A continuum links dialects; the individual varieties remain the units being compared.

Isogloss: A geographic boundary marking where a particular linguistic feature changes. Overlapping isoglosses rarely coincide, so dialect boundaries do not form a single clean line.
Scandinavian dialect continuum: A continuum of North Germanic dialects across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It illustrates how closely related neighboring speech can coexist with distinct national standards.
