Dialectical materialism

A Marxist philosophical framework that explains change in nature and society through material conditions, processes, and contradictions.

Dialectics: A method of reasoning that examines relations, tensions, and change rather than treating things as isolated and static. Dialectical materialism adapts this approach to material reality.
Karl Marx: A nineteenth-century philosopher and political economist who co-developed the critique of capitalism and historical materialism. His materialist critique supplied the framework's social and historical foundations.
Quantity and quality: Two aspects of change in which gradual quantitative shifts can produce a qualitative transformation. This principle describes how accumulation can alter a system's kind or organization.
Vladimir Lenin: A Russian revolutionary and political theorist who led the Bolshevik Revolution and developed Marxist theory. His writings defended materialism and helped define Marxist philosophy for later movements.
Materialism: The philosophical view that reality is fundamentally material, rather than dependent on mind or spirit. This framework gives material conditions explanatory priority.
Friedrich Engels: A German philosopher and socialist who collaborated with Karl Marx and developed Marxist theory. He explicitly extended dialectical materialism to nature in works such as Anti-Dühring.
Negation of the negation: A dialectical pattern in which a later development supersedes an earlier negation while retaining some of its features. It offers one account of development that preserves and transforms earlier forms.
Joseph Stalin: A Soviet political leader whose rule institutionalized an official interpretation of Marxism-Leninism. His philosophical summary made dialectical materialism a standardized Soviet doctrine.
Contradiction: A relation in which opposing tendencies or claims coexist and come into conflict. Internal conflicts are treated as sources of development and change.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: A German idealist philosopher whose dialectical account of development profoundly influenced Marx. Marx transformed Hegel's idealist dialectic into a materialist approach.
