Dialectology

Dialectology is the systematic study of dialects, examining their linguistic features, geographic distribution, social variation, and historical development.

Linguistic Atlas: A collection of maps showing where linguistic forms occur across a region. Atlas maps visualize the geographic patterns dialectologists document.
Dialect: A variety of a language distinguished by systematic features of pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary. Dialect is the central unit whose patterns dialectology investigates.
Georg Wenker: A German linguist who conducted a large nineteenth-century survey of regional speech. His mailed questionnaire survey helped establish large-scale dialect geography.

Sociolinguistics: The study of relationships between language and social life. Sociolinguistics foregrounds social organization, while dialectology often emphasizes varieties and their distribution.
