Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems

Galileo Galilei’s 1632 book compares arguments for the geocentric and heliocentric models through a conversation among three characters. Its publication led to a trial by the Roman Inquisition and Galileo’s condemnation.

Geocentrism: A family of cosmological models that places Earth at or near the center of the universe. The book gives its strongest defense to the traditional Earth-centered cosmos.
Galilean moons: The four largest moons of Jupiter, first observed by Galileo in 1610. Their orbit around Jupiter shows that not every celestial body circles Earth.
Nicolaus Copernicus: The Renaissance astronomer whose 1543 book proposed that Earth rotates and planets orbit the Sun. His model is the heliocentric system at the center of Galileo’s dialogue.

Heliocentrism: A cosmological model in which Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. The book argues for this rival to the traditional geocentric system.
Phases of Venus: The changing illuminated appearances of Venus, including gibbous and nearly full phases visible through a telescope. The full range of phases contradicts the strict Ptolemaic arrangement of Venus.
On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres: Nicolaus Copernicus’s 1543 work presenting a mathematical model of a Sun-centered planetary system. Copernicus’s book launched the system Galileo later defended.
Salviati: The mathematically informed speaker who presents the Copernican case in Galileo’s dialogue. He leads the book’s defense of Earth’s motion and the Sun-centered system.
