Diction

Diction is the way speech sounds are articulated and pronounced in singing or speaking. It includes how clearly words and their sounds are produced.

Articulatory phonetics: The study of how speech sounds are produced by the vocal tract. It explains how tongue, lips, jaw, and other articulators produce clear diction.
Singing: The production of musical tones with the human voice. Singing requires words to remain intelligible across sustained pitches and musical phrasing.
Accent: A characteristic pattern of pronunciation associated with a speaker or group. An accent shapes diction, but clear articulation does not require eliminating one.
International Phonetic Alphabet: A standardized set of symbols for representing speech sounds across languages. It records the exact pronunciations that ordinary spelling often obscures.
Place of articulation: The location in the vocal tract where a consonant is produced. Precise placement distinguishes consonants that otherwise sound similar.
Classical singing: A vocal performance tradition using trained technique, often with acoustic projection and formal repertoire. Its sustained vowels and large performance spaces make articulation choices especially consequential.
Received Pronunciation: A traditionally prestigious accent of British English associated with southern England. It is a specific accent, not a universal standard for good diction.
Phoneme: A contrastive sound category that can distinguish words in a language. Diction makes phoneme contrasts audible, such as the initial sounds in “pat” and “bat.”
Manner of articulation: The way airflow is shaped or obstructed to produce a consonant. The manner of producing a consonant affects its clarity and character.
Choral singing: Singing performed by an organized group of singers, usually in multiple voice parts. Coordinated consonants and vowels help a choir sound unified and make its text clear.
