Die casting

Die casting forces molten metal under pressure into a reusable metal mold, or die. It produces parts with detailed shapes and consistent dimensions.

Cold-chamber die casting: A die-casting process in which molten metal is ladled into a separate injection chamber for each shot. It handles metals whose melting temperatures would damage an immersed injection system.
Die (manufacturing): A specialized tool that shapes material by containing or constraining it during manufacturing. A die is the reusable mold that defines a casting's surfaces.
Automotive industry: The industry that designs, manufactures, and supplies motor vehicles and their components. Die casting supplies vehicle housings, brackets, and structural components at high volume.
Sand casting: A casting process that forms a mold from bonded sand and usually destroys it to remove the casting. Unlike reusable dies, sand molds suit lower volumes and larger parts.
Hot-chamber die casting: A die-casting process in which the injection mechanism remains immersed in molten metal. It shortens the cycle for low-melting alloys such as zinc.
Aluminum alloy: A metallic material in which aluminum is the principal element combined with other elements. Aluminum alloys are widely die cast for lightweight structural and housing parts.
Electric motor: A machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical motion. Die-cast housings and end shields are common in motor assemblies.
Investment casting: A casting process that uses a disposable ceramic shell formed around a wax pattern. It can produce intricate shapes but does not use a reusable metal die.
Die-casting machine: A machine that clamps a die and injects molten metal into its cavity under pressure. Its clamping and injection systems govern filling and part production.
Zinc alloy: A metallic material made primarily of zinc with additions that tailor its properties. Zinc alloys cast readily into small, detailed components.
