Diego Portales

Diego Portales (1793–1837) was a Chilean political leader whose authority and ideas helped shape the conservative republic established after 1830, especially its strong executive government.

Joaquín Prieto: A Chilean general and politician who served as president from 1831 to 1841. As president, he governed during Portales’s rise and helped establish the conservative order.
Constitution of 1833: Chile’s constitution from 1833, establishing a centralized republic with a strong presidency. It gave durable constitutional form to the executive-centered republic associated with Portales.
Chilean War of Independence: The conflict from 1810 to 1826 through which Chile broke from Spanish rule. The independence struggle created the new state whose authority Portales sought to consolidate.
War of the Confederation: A war from 1836 to 1839 between Chile and the Peru–Bolivian Confederation. Portales’s opposition to the confederation helped bring Chile into this war.

Ministerial system: An arrangement in which ministers exercise government authority under the direction of an executive. Portales governed chiefly through ministerial office rather than as president.
