Dielectric loss

Dielectric loss is the conversion of electromagnetic energy into heat within an insulating material exposed to a changing electric field. It arises from delayed polarization and electrical conduction.

Complex permittivity: A representation of a material’s permittivity with real and imaginary parts, describing energy storage and dissipation. Its imaginary part quantifies polarization-related energy dissipation in an alternating field.
Microwave heating: The heating of materials by electromagnetic fields in the microwave frequency range. It deliberately uses dielectric loss to generate heat inside food and other materials.
Permittivity: A measure of how a material responds to an electric field and stores electric energy. Dielectric loss is described through the dissipative component of permittivity.
Conduction loss: Energy dissipation caused by electric current flowing through a material’s finite conductivity. It can contribute to dielectric heating but arises from charge transport rather than polarization lag.
Loss tangent: The ratio of a dielectric’s loss factor to its storage factor at a specified frequency. This dimensionless ratio summarizes how much energy the material dissipates relative to how much it stores.
Dielectric heating: Heating produced by energy dissipation in a material exposed to an alternating electric field. It is the broader process that uses dielectric loss to warm insulating materials.
Polarization density: The electric dipole moment per unit volume of a material. Its magnitude and phase response determine polarization-related energy storage and loss.
Magnetic loss: Electromagnetic energy dissipation associated with a material’s response to a changing magnetic field. It is the magnetic counterpart to loss caused by a changing electric field.
Dielectric relaxation: The delayed response of electric polarization to a changing electric field. Polarization lag produces dielectric loss when the field repeatedly changes direction.
Radio-frequency heating: A process that heats materials using alternating electric fields at radio frequencies. It exploits dielectric loss for applications such as industrial drying and sealing.
