Dielectric polarization

Dielectric polarization is the displacement or alignment of bound positive and negative charges in matter under an electric field. It describes the material’s electric dipole moment per unit volume.

Electric dipole moment: A measure of the separation and magnitude of positive and negative charge in a system. Polarization sums microscopic dipole moments and divides by the material’s volume.
Electric field: A vector field describing the electric force per unit positive charge at each point in space. The applied field is the stimulus that displaces or aligns bound charges.
Capacitor: An electrical component that stores energy in an electric field between conductors. A dielectric’s polarization increases capacitance by reducing the internal field for a given free charge.
Electrical conduction: The transport of electric charge through a material under an electric field. Conduction moves mobile charges through the material; polarization displaces or aligns bound charges.
Electronic polarization: A shift of an atom’s electron cloud relative to its nucleus under an electric field. This rapid response occurs in nearly all dielectric materials, including nonpolar atoms.
Electric susceptibility: A dimensionless measure of how readily a material polarizes in response to an electric field. In a linear material, susceptibility relates polarization to the field.
Dielectric strength: The maximum electric field an insulating material can withstand before electrical breakdown. Strong fields can overwhelm bound-charge response and initiate breakdown.
Space-charge polarization: Polarization caused by mobile charges accumulating at interfaces or barriers within a material. It is often grouped with dielectric responses but depends on charge migration and accumulation.
Ionic polarization: A displacement of oppositely charged ions relative to one another in a solid under an electric field. In ionic solids, field-driven shifts of positive and negative ions contribute to the net polarization.
Permittivity: A measure of how an electric field relates to electric displacement in a medium. Permittivity captures the material’s effect on fields through its polarization.
